Learn to drive a Ford Model T
The Boothbay Railway Village will offer a free introductory Model T driving class on Mondays, May 16 and May 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Museum. This is truly a fun and memorable hands-on experience that’s perfect for anyone who wants to take a step back in time and learn how to drive, or get a refresher, in one of the 15 million “Tin Lizzies” built by the Ford Motor Company over 100 years ago.
Learning to drive a Model T Ford is an adventure for even the most experienced modern motorist. They are operated with 3 foot pedals (no gas pedal!), one hand lever, and two hand controls on the steering wheel. Our expert instructors are Nat Wilson, Bob Ryan and Chuck Vaughn. They will provide instruction in use of spark and throttle control levers, coordination of hand and foot controls, proper shifting techniques, stopping the vehicle, correct use of the neutral / brake lever, reversing the vehicle and starting basics. Not only will everyone have time to enjoy being a passenger in one of the Museum’s Model Ts but they will each get a chance to be behind the wheel before the end of the two-part class.
Participants must have a current driver’s license and be willing to sign a waiver – there were no seat belts in 1917! Anyone under 18 must have a parent or guardian attend with them. All participants will also receive a printed guide to operating a Model T. Those who successfully complete the course and show a natural talent will be invited to consider additional training to be a volunteer driver for the Museum.
The class is free but pre-registration is required. Limited to 12 participants. Contact the Boothbay Railway Village for more information at (207) 633-4727, or online at www.railwayvillage.org. The Boothbay Railway Village is located at 586 Wiscasset Road, Route 27 in Boothbay.
