Maine might be Vacationland for tourists, but it can be a demanding work environment that requires skill, patience, intelligence, and passion for its wage earners. The upcoming exhibit at the Maine Art Gallery, includes art that illustrates this varied and dynamic working world. The exhibit runs from July 13-Aug. 13, with an opening reception on Saturday, July 15 from 4 to 7 p.m.

The working waterfront has always been a popular subject for artists, but this exhibit goes beyond just featuring waterfront subjects. These artists have explored agricultural subjects, manufacturing, construction, everyday household chores, the lives of commuters, restaurant work, ice harvesting, objects that are used in work as well as portraits of workers.

The exhibit is composed of two parts. Sixteen artists who are known for their work depicting occupations in Maine were invited to participate. Another 41 artists were juried into the show based on their artwork that depicts the theme. An overwhelming response to the call for entries made the juror’s job difficult but, in the end, work was selected that illustrated the theme, demonstrated outstanding use of media, and showed a personal connection to the subject matter.

Working Maine includes art that ranges from drawing, painting, assemblage, sculpture, and collage to photographic prints. Included among the artists are Jillian Herrigel, Bjorn Runquist, Nina Fuller, Daniel Corey, Chris Beneman, Andre Benoit, Greg Horwitch, Catherine Bickford, Lydia Kaeyer, Sarah Greenier, Mark Coates and Michael Maron.

All are invited to the opening reception on July 15 for music and refreshments.

The gallery, at 15 Warren St., Wiscasset, is open Thursday - Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Free on-street parking.
