Thanks to the Midcoast Chapter of Maine Women’s Network, more than 120 people were recently impacted by the nationally recognized documentary, “The Mask You Live In,”  at the Strand Theatre in Rockland.

“The Mask You Live In” explores how America’s narrow definition of masculinity is harming boys, men and society at large, and inspires the viewer to take action.Gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become "real" men.

Presented as a fundraiser for New Hope for Women, the event raised $1,300 which will go directly into domestic and dating violence programming in the 109 schools served by the organization. Event sponsors included Antique House Restoration & Construction, Brimstone Consulting, Camden National Bank, Edward Jones of Camden, Elm Street Marketing Essentials, Horch Roofing, McLean Borden Cottage, O'Hara Corporation, Rockport Steel and The Strand Theatre.

The film event culminated with a discussion and Foundation of Manhood activity that engaged the entire audience in writing words that convey a broad and nuanced definition of manhood onto stones. These messaged stones will help "build" the foundation for boys and young men to enjoy healthy and peaceful relationships.

Local men and boys who are committed to modeling what healthy relationships look like participated—either in person as ushers or post-film discussion participants at the event—or in New Hope for Women's Boys Groups in the weeks preceding the event.

“It was inspiring to have so many men volunteer to be a part of creating a healthier definition of masculinity for the next generation,” said New Hope for Women Community Education Director Meg Klingelhofer, “and for the boys to volunteer to carry the message forward to their peers and make it their own.”

New Hope for Women's Youth Educators co-facilitate Boys Groups with positive male role models in middle and high schools in Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, and Waldo counties. Here the boys have a chance to observe male and female co-facilitators and other boys in the group working collaboratively, valuing each other's thoughts and opinions, and treating each other with respect as they create a trusting group atmosphere.

The Maine Women’s Network is a non-profit organization offering education and connection through monthly meetings and annual statewide events. Programs feature high-caliber speakers and meaningful networking opportunities. There are currently three chapters serving 250 women in the Midcoast, the Lewiston/Auburn area and Portland.
