Mathias Fine Art presents ‘Blue and Yellow: Persist’
Mathias Fine Art has been showing museum-quality, content-rich art since 1991. This summer the theme is “Blue & Yellow: Persist.” The show opens July 20 and will be exhibited through Oct. 2. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, July 30 from 3 to 5 p.m.
Lesia Sochor has exhibited at Mathias Fine Art on several occasions since 1996; the Maine painter is of Ukrainian descent. Her parents settled in Pennsylvania in the 1950s and Lesia graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art in due course. When the Russian invasion started in February, Lesia and Cordula Mathias talked about the horrific events and decided to explore the idea of an exhibition focused on the colors of Ukraine. The invited artists responded with alacrity to the idea in spite of a challenging time-line. Creativity is countering the feeling of helplessness in the face of the destructive onslaught that is being visited upon a country fighting for self-determination. The colors of blue and yellow have much to offer to artist and viewer alike.
Max Bartsch, Kimberly Callas, Michael Culver, Paul Feyling, Patt Franklin, Brigitte Keller, John Lorence, Kate Marohn and Lesia Sochor will show paintings, photographs and mixed media. The late artist Brenda Bettinson will be represented with images from her Maine I & Maine II periods. Bettinson’s life-story was accompanied by a ribbon of blue and yellow starting with her school uniform to her former employer’s – Pace University - house style, ending with her Maine neighbor’s lobster boat and gear and let’s not forget the Seahawks! New to the gallery line-up is sculptor Antoinette Prien Schultze, whose stone sculptures incorporate colored glass and sometimes wood. This dynamic group show is also a reminder of the human connections between the artists, the gallery and the wider world and what can be created when there is a common purpose.
Events connected with the exhibition include two gallery talks by Cordula Mathias will be on Wednesday, July 27 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. and on Friday, Aug. 12 from 3:30 to 4 p.m. A musical presentation of the Bandura, the national instrument of the Ukraine, by Andrea Goodman will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20.
There is also a fund-raising component for Ukraine to the exhibition: raffle tickets will be offered and a percentage from the sale of selected items will go to humanitarian relief. More information will soon be posted on www.mathiasfineart.com.
