'Minions,' Nazi brutality, WWII, and an Ethiopian princess

“Mr. Holmes,” Sherlock (Ian McKellen) is long-retired and near the end of his life. He grapples with an unreliable memory and must rely on his housekeeper’s son as he revisits the still-unsolved case that led to his retirement. “Mr. Holmes” plays Wednesday, Aug. 12 and Thursday, Aug.13 at 7 p.m.
“Minions”: In the “Despicable Me” movies minions were represented as lovable yellow creatures — they were played to such successful comic effect that now the minions are starring in their own film. Narrated by Geoffrey Rush, “Minions” features the voice talents of Pierre Coffin, Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Steve Coogan.
“Minions” plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14 through Tuesday, Aug.18; Sunday, Aug. 16 at 2 and 7 p.m.
Live show: “Etty” a bright, young Jewish woman in Amsterdam documented her insights while facing Nazi brutality. This one-hour play, starring Susan Stein as Etty, explores her dire ethical dilemmas and struggle to maintain her faith in humanity on the eve of deportation.
A discussion with the actress will follow. Performance is Monday, Aug. 17, at 4 p.m. A $10 donation is suggested, though all are welcome to attend. All donations are tax deductible and support the nonprofit, Etty Inc.

BBC presents: “Castles in the Sky” The second of four features made for the BBC commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. It is the mid-1930s and the storm clouds of WWII are forming in Germany. This film charts the work of Robert Watson Watt, the pioneer of Radar, and his hand-picked team of eccentric yet brilliant meteorologists as they struggle to turn the concept of Radar into a workable reality. Plays Monday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m.
The Met Summer Encore: Verdi’s “Aida” Verdi's ancient Egyptian drama stars Liudmyla Monastyrska as the enslaved Ethiopian princess caught in a love triangle with the heroic Radamès, played by Roberto Alagna, and the proud Egyptian princess Amneris, sung by Olga Borodina. Fabio Luisi conducts. Plays Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.
