MSMT says ‘hallelujah’ with 'Sister Act'
Maine State Music Theatre (MSMT) is proud to be one of the first regional theaters to present the feel-amazing musical comedy smash, “Sister Act,” running June 24 – July 11. The award-winning Donna Drake (MSMT’s “The Full Monty,” “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story”) will direct and choreograph.
Based on the hit 1992 film, the show features original music by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors). Menken was also nominated for five TONY Awards including Best Musical.
“Sister Act combines heart and joy to create musical theatre magic on stage,” says Artistic Director, Curt Dale Clark. “The performances will knock your socks off.”
Filled with uplifting music, outrageous comedy and dancing, and a truly moving story. When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique personality and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but blows her cover. Soon, the gang is giving chase only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.
This high-energy show stars Trista Dollison (Deloris Van Cartier), Kingsley Leggs (Curtis Jackson), Jay McKenzie (Eddie Souther), Mary Jo McConnell (Mother Superior), David Girolmo (Monsignor O’Hara), Cary Michelle Miller (Sister Mary Robert) and Charis Leos (Sister Mary Patrick).
The supporting cast features Nik Alexander, Jayson Elliott, April Woodall, Brian Maurice Kinnard, Adewonu-ola Ogunfowora, Michaela K. Boissonneault, Beth Kirkpatrick, Jillian Jarrett, Chrissy Albanese, Alec Cohen, James Spencer Dean, Jillaine McGough and Birdie Newman Katz.
MSMT will be holding a FREE talkback “A Peek Behind The Curtain: Sister Act” at Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, on July 1 at noon. Panel participants will include actors, administrative staff, technical staff and members of the creative team. Audience attendees will have an opportunity to questions about the production. Attendees are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch.
