Newcastle artist sentenced to jail
A Newcastle man who was originally charged with 20 counts of possession of child pornography has pleaded guilty to one of the counts and will go to prison.
Robert Ransley, 59, of Newcastle will serve four months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of felony possession Feb. 3 in Wiscasset Superior Court.
Possession of sexually explicit material is a Class C felony crime, and has a maximum penalty of five years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine.
Ransley was sentenced to three years in prison with all but 120 days suspended. Ransley will also receive two years probation.
Ransley was ordered to neither use nor possess any device with Internet capabilities and to have no contact with children under the age of 16 without parental supervision.
Ransley was originally arrested July 16 by special agent Justin Kittredge. His computer was later seized, and after an analysis it was revealed to be storing thousands of pornographic images of children, including some under the age of 12.
In the original release from his arrest, it was stated that none of the victims were believed to be from Maine.
Ransley was indicted by the Lincoln County Grand Jury in September 2014 and charged with 20 counts of Class C possession of sexually explicit material.
Ransley is an artist with paintings in galleries worldwide.
