Oratorio Chorale in rehearsal for ‘Shakespeare in Concert’
The Oratorio Chorale, under the direction of Emily Isaacson, and Acorn Productions’ Naked Shakespeare, directed by Mike Levine, are currently in rehearsal for a March performance of “Shakespeare in Concert.”
Singers and actors are working on music and scenes from “As You Like It,” “Twelfth Night,” “The Tempest,” “Othello,” and others. Composers range from Thomas Morley, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Verdi, Mendelssohn, William Schuman and Amy Beach to contemporaries Steven Sametz and Judith Lang Zaimont. The music demonstrates the breadth of interpretations through four centuries.
Naked Shakespeare’s performances, one of Acorn Productions’ programs, bring the words of the Bard to audiences in non-traditional venues (such as wine bars or restaurants) and are presented without sets, lights and costumes.
Bowdoin Professor of Music Mary Hunter will provide pre-concert remarks about music in Shakespeare’s works, both in his own time and in later presentations.
Performances will take place from Friday through Sunday, March 7, 8 and 9, at the Bowdoin College Chapel, on the Bowdoin campus at 3725 College Street in Brunswick. Pre-concert remarks March 7 and 8 will be at 7 p.m., concert seating at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 9, pre-concert remarks will be at 3 p.m. with concert seating at 3:30 p.m.
