Play ball!
The 2016 Major League baseball season is barely a week old and already the Boston and Portland sports radio personalities are calling for Red Sox Manager John Farrell's firing — after only six games, with 156 to play. We all know that players can't be fired (demoted, traded and benched, sure, but not fired) and that managers usually take the first axe swing when teams aren't performing as "expected."
Now, I expect Farrell to be fired this season because I don't see the team making the playoffs because of the lack of pitching. But I won't blame Farrell. I blame the front office for not beefing up the pitching rotation.
Starters Clay Buchholtz (7-7 in 2015), Joe Kelly (10-6 in 2015), Rick Porcello (9-15 in 2015), Steven Wright (5-4 in 2015) and injured Eduardo Rodriguez (10-6) got a whopping 41 wins combined last season. Yes, they did add "the ace," David Price (18-5 in 2015), but does anyone really think that one of the other pitchers is going to get at least 15 wins this season? If one of them does, I'll eat my Red Sox cap. Pass the mustard, please. And even though we got Craig Kimbrel, one of the top relief pitchers in the National League the past five years (averaged 44.8 saves a season in that time), the rest of the bullpen scares-me-to-death! I will be surprised if Kimbrel gets 30 saves this season.
And there's lots of questions about the everyday players. Pablo Sandoval came in overweight and was replaced by an unknown quantity in Travis Shaw, Hanley Ramirez' better days are behind him, Dustin Pedroia seems to be injury prone and I don't expect Xander Boegarts (.320 in 2015) and Mookie Betts (.291 in 2015) to play as well as they did in 2015.
I like Brock Holt and maybe, just maybe, JBJ (Jackie Bradley Jr.) will have a breakout season. And I am sure going to enjoy watching "Big Papi," David Ortiz, ride off into the sunset in his final season. It’s been quite a ride with the big guy since 2004.
Hopefully I will be completely wrong.
Go Red Sox!
