Wiscasset police identified the victims involved in the fatal car crash that occurred on Friday, May 13, on Route One just at the Woolwich line near Montsweag Brook.

The driver of the southbound vehicle, a Lincoln Town Car, was Henry Barstow, 83, of Bristol. According to Maine Medical Center in Portland, his condition was upgraded on Monday to satisfactory. Alice Barstow of Bristol, who was a passenger in that vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers were transported to MMC.

The driver in the northbound vehicle, a VW Jetta, was Jiri Slosar, 65, of Lexington, Mass. He is listed in critical condition at Maine Medical Center.

The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Traffic was diverted via Mountain Road around the scene for most of the afternoon, and Interim Police Chief Jerry Hinton was warning motorists to avoid the area. By 2:30 p.m., traffic was inching through, one lane at a time, after the vehicles were removed and the reconstruction of the accident was complete.

Hinton said that a firm cause could not yet be established. Blood samples were taken at the hospital, as state law requires for any fatal motor vehicle accident. Hinton said they will also be looking for diagnostic instruments on board both vehicles as part of the reconstruction.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the vehicle driven by Slosar crossed the center line and struck the car Henry Barstow was driving.

The Wiscasset Fire Department placed absorbent pads along the road shoulder to prevent any fuel or oil from entering the brook. The Wiscasset Police Department was assisted by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, which performed the reconstruction, and Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, which performed traffic control. Also on hand were members of the Bath and Woolwich fire departments and EMS. Portland police and the Maine State Police assisted with collecting blood work at the hospital.

As Friday was Hinton’s last day on the job, he appointed Officer Perry Hatch, who also serves as School Resource Officer, to follow up on the accident. In addition to Wiscasset police, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and the Lincoln County District Attorney will continue to investigate. No charges have been filed at this time, Hinton said. The investigation is expected to last another couple of weeks, he said.
