Rockport teen dies following Waldoboro truck-bicycle collision
WALDOBORO — A Rockport teen died Aug. 2 following injuries sustained Friday night, when a truck struck him on Union Road in Waldoboro.
Waldoboro Police Chief William Lobombarde said Aug. 4 that Tyler Wood, 15, of Rockport, died at Maine Medical Center around noon on Saturday.
The accident happened shortly after 8 p.m. Friday, when Wood and his friend, Antonio Seccareccio, both on bicycles, had stopped to talk with pedestrians on the side of the road, police said.
“Witnesses told police the two boys were stopped in the southbound travel lane talking to two pedestrians [when] the accident occurred,” Waldoboro police said in a press release issued Saturday.
LifeFlight of Maine initially took Wood to a Lewiston hospital with serious head injuries, but diverted to Maine Medical Center in Portland because of its pediatrics department, said Lobombarde.
Seccareccio, 14, of Waldoboro, also on a bicycle, hurt his leg when the other bicycle struck him, police said.
He was transported to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, and subsequently to Maine Medical Center, with a leg injury.
According to Waldoboro police, Joseph E. Benedix, 24, of Waldoboro was driving south near 603 Union Road in a 2001 Mitsubishi refrigerated box truck when it struck the bike Wood was on. The truck was registered to Simmons Lobster Wharf of Friendship.
“Benedix told police he didn’t see the kids in the road until he was almost to them,” the release said. “Benedix tried to swerve around the bikes but struck the bike closest to the center line.”
Wood was thrown from the bike, then landed on the road’s shoulder.
The two pedestrians nearby were not hurt.
An investigation into Friday night’s accident remains under way, said Lobombarde.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is reconstructing the accident; in addition, the commercial vehicles unit of the Maine State Police has been called on to examine the truck.
