Salt Bay Chamberfest presents world premiere
Salt Bay Chamberfest will present a world premiere by Erhu Master and composer Wang Guowei on August 8 during the 2014 Chamberfest in Damariscotta.
Guowei’s work, “Drinking Alone with the Moon,” is a trio written for erhu, violin and cello, inspired by a poem by the great Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai. The erhu is a two-stringed Chinese fiddle commonly used in Chinese folk ensembles. Performers will include Wang Guowei, erhu, Tim Fain, violin and Sophie Shao, cello.
The August 8 concert delves into the festival’s theme of darkness and light and features works that depict the moon. The Franco-Chinese program will explore shade and color with Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” Hua Yanjun’s “Reflections of the Moon in the Erquan Pool,” Zhou Long’s “Taiping Drums,” Chen Yi’s “Romance,” and Ravel’s monumental “Piano Trio.” Pianist Ignat Solzhenitsyn will join Fain, Shao and Guowei for this special evening of chamber music sponsored by Bath Savings Institution.
Festival concerts will be held on August 5, 8, 12 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Darrows Barn at Round Top Farm in Damariscotta with pre-concert talks by Mark Mandarano beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $30/adults and $5/students, and two subscription levels are available. Tickets are available at www.saltbaychamberfest.org or by calling BrownPaperTickets at 1-800-838-3006.
