Sculpture: ‘Monumental To Wearable’ in September
Markings Gallery, 50 Front St., Bath is pleased to present an exhibit of sculptural jewelry by Midcoast artist Steve Burns for the month of September.
For over 35 years, Steve made his living working with metal. He operated his own bronze foundry and forge, and did restoration and conservation on major pieces for museums, galleries and art insurance companies throughout the New York metro area. He is also a professional sculptor with an extensive background in fabricating and casting bronze sculpture, both large and small.
Most recently he has applied his modeling skills and large sculpture ideas to working in gold and silver through fabrication, casting and repoussé. His work is inspired by stylized Scythian animal forms. He is particularly interested in fashioning big cats and wolves in fine metals.
When speaking about his work, Burns says: “I’m fascinated with the conjunction of science and art. My work examines how pseudo-science, hoax and myth change how we experience our planet. I ponder past and future extinctions while working with modern structures and ancient anatomies.”
Burns will be debuting some of his newest gold work and talking about the ancient history and techniques of repoussé, and he will demonstrate his experimental approach at his Gallery Talk on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. Join us for a magical evening of storytelling as Steve regales us with his adventures.
