Shawn Colvin comes to Boothbay
The multiple Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin comes to Maine this spring to help kick off the season at Boothbay Harbor’s historic Opera House on Saturday, April 12.
The frankness in Colvin’s work has always been tempered by humor and sensuality and a gift for finding strong, simple melodies. She’s not one to directly take on social or political issues in her lyrics, but she’s bracingly honest about her own travails and triumphs and that resonates with her listeners.
“This is how I write. I don’t know how to make something personal and evocative that is a protest, a complaint or finger-pointing — unless it’s to a bad guy in a personal relationship,” Colvin said.
She is an openhearted storyteller who is has engaged her fans for 25 years. Recognized during her early touring days with Suzanne Vega, Colvin won a Grammy in 1989 for her first album, “Steady On.” In the years since, she’s received seven additional Grammy nominations, and two more Grammys for “Sunny Came Home,” which won both Song and Record of the Year in 1998.
Her most recent album, “All Fall Down,” was released in 2012 and features guest vocalists and musicians Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss and Jakob Dylan. More recently, Colvin toured with Mary Chapin Carpenter in the fall of 2013 and will be just concluding an early spring tour with Steve Earle when she arrives in Maine.
