Sheepscot Chorus announces Student Music Award winners
Sheepscot Valley Chorus is delighted to announce the winners of our 2014 Student Music Awards, given annually to one student from each of the three local high schools, Boothbay Region High School, Lincoln Academy and Wiscasset High School. The students are selected by their high school music teachers, judged by their commitment to and leadership in music.
Award winners receive a $250 stipend from the chorus and an invitation to be featured performers in our spring concerts, this year held Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 at 3 p.m., at 2nd Congregational Church, Newcastle.
Also featured on the program will be last year's Music Award Winner from Lincoln Academy, Abbey Hutchins. Tickets are available at the door and at Maine Coast Book Store, Sherman's Bookstore, and Treats.
Boothbay Region High School Award winner Sequoia Hoinsky lives on a small farm on Southport Island and has a soft spot for animals. She has been in chorus for as long as she has been in school and loves music. After graduation this June, Hoinsky will be attending Kripalu in Massachusetts to be a yoga instructor. She has been modeling for four years and will continue to expand her career modeling for Portland Models and Talent. Hoinsky will be singing with the chorus in the “Fauré Requiem,” as well as numbers on the second half of the program.
Wiscasset High School's Abby Dunn is a singer/songwriter from Wiscasset who sings in the school chorus and plays piano, guitar and ukulele. She has played at many local venues, including the Chocolate Church Arts Center in Bath. Dunn plans to continue her music studies in college with a focus on music technology. She recently performed in the District III Honors Treble Choir. Dunn will perform her own compositions and “Love Me or Leave Me,” written by Kahn and Donaldson and popularized by Nina Simone.
Lincoln Academy's Teiga Martin says she is thrilled to receive the award offered by the Sheepscot Valley Chorus. She has been playing French horn since the fifth grade with her amazing teacher, Kitty Breskin. Recently, Martin traveled to Nashville, Tenn. to play in the All-National Honor Band Festival. She has also been a member of the All-State and District III Honor Festivals, and has enjoyed playing in the pit orchestra for various musicals. Martin plans to major in biomedical engineering and minor in music when she attends college in the fall. She will perform the third movement of Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3 in E-flat Major, K. 447.
The Sheepscot Valley Chorus was founded in Wiscasset over 25 years ago and is directed by Linda Blanchard with accompaniment by Sean Fleming, both of Damariscotta.
