Southport death under investigation; deceased identified
UPDATE: According to the family, Paul Doelp of Reading, Pa., twin brother of Peter Doelp of Southport, suffered what is believed to be a medical problem as he and Peter were leaving the Doelps’ property. Paul fell backwards toward a hill, hit his head and then rolled into the water. Peter tried to get him out, neighbors came and assisted until the emergency crews arrived.
Original story: The Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, Southport Fire Department, Maine Marine Patrol, and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office were called to an apparent drowning off Pierce Lane on Southport Island around 6 p.m. Monday evening, Oct. 5.
According to Sergeant Russell Wright of the Maine Marine Patrol, Paul Doelp, 81, of Pennsylvania, fell down a steep embankment near his home and sustained head lacerations.
Wright said Doelp was likely dead before he hit the water.
According to Southport Fire Chief Gerry Gamage, Doelp was visiting his twin brother Peter Doelp on Southport when the accident occurred.
“It was a sad sight, Peter trying to save him,” Gamage said.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brian Collamore is currently investigating.
