Summer camp fun at the Merry Barn
Hello summer! Nature was in full bloom at the Merry Barn to kick off our first camp of the season: Celebrating Mother Earth. This nature-themed writing camp, co-taught by Stephanie McSherry and Kathy Hartley, explored nature’s wonders through stories, picture books, poems, and art. Learning about change maker Greta Thunberg, and introducing advocacy at the local level, kids leaned into ways they too can make a difference. Their enthusiasm led them through sketching, writing, and poetry. We loved how the kids practiced process over product, and engaged with so many new creative projects.
Our second camp of the season, Magical Mythical Creatures, filled the Barn with magic. Joined by author and fairy expert Liza Gardner Walsh, kids from 6-8 years old built fairy houses, complete with shell sized bathtubs, daisy chains, and tiny berry feasts. They wrote stories about dragons, drew monsters, and listened to tales of mythical creatures. Explorations through stories and art opened up each child’s unique creativity, and they let their imaginations soar.
If this sounds like something your child may enjoy but they didn’t get a chance to join us for either of these weeks, we have one spot open for our July 25-29 camp, Wondrous Words. One spot remains in the Aug. 1-5 camp, Cool Courageous Kids Can Change the World. All camps aim to support creativity, literacy and collaboration, while exploring story and art.
