Taking time
I’m not good on stairs. I’ve missed a step and fallen down them, and tripped going up them, even breaking an arm once. Other than making a case for elevators, the lesson is just watch where you’re going.
Wiscasset selectmen are right to watch their steps as they carry out the voters’ wishes on the downtown project. Months before residents voted, state officials said maintenance is on the town. But people are busy and not everybody hears or reads every piece of news or information, so it’s understandable that the maintenance piece would be news to some.
The board’s latest delay in green-lighting the project to move forward will give Wiscasset officials time to mull the latest version of the deal, now a letter. And as state officials have said, design and a municipal-state agreement are still to come. That means more time for everyone to keep weighing in on the end result and the upcoming advisory committee should go a long way in hashing out the issues.
It’s good to see citizens getting involved at any stage, and we’ve seen some stepped up involvement via the new taxpayers alliance, as well as residents’ continued comments on the need for improvements downtown. Keep talking. It will help light the way for selectmen as they take their steps and will help the state in the project’s design.

Vote Tuesday. Or if you absentee-voted, way to go. Whether you’re deciding all national and state items and candidates or, in Wiscasset, the firefighters’ car-washing issue, as well, the lines, if long, are worth it. Voting is free, and so are we. So let’s take time to exercise that right Nov. 8, then on Nov. 11 take time to thank the veterans who have protected our freedom.
