Teen dies following ATV-car crash in Whitefield
A Whitefield teen on an ATV that collided with a car on Howe Road in that town on June 23 later died from his injuries, a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office press release states.
The unnamed 16-year-old boy was operating a Yamaha ATV and was not wearing a helmet when it collided with a Subaru station wagon that a 16-year-old, South China girl was driving, at about 7 p.m. Monday, according to the release.
Both vehicles had been traveling northbound on Howe Road when the ATV entered the southbound lane to overtake the Subaru, the release continues. “As the ATV returned to the northbound lane, it crossed the Subaru’s path and both collided on the side of the roadway. The ATV rolled and ejected the operator .... The Subaru came to rest on the side of the road.”
The Subaru’s driver was not hurt; Delta Ambulance took the ATV’s operator to Maine General Hospital in Augusta. “(The) teen succumbed to injuries a short time later,” the release states.
The accident remained under investigation; Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Nein was reconstructing the accident. Deputy First Class Mark Bridgham was the primary investigating officer, aided by Sgt. Daniel Sceviour. The Whitefield Fire Department responded to the scene. Howe Road was closed to through-traffic for about three hours, the release states.
