Three things
Had a fight on Monday and Tuesday. There was a lot of grunting and begging on my part. But I persevered and my opponent finally backed off by Wednesday morning.
My opponent? Our office email system.
Emails came in slow, dozens upon dozens of "Not Responding" messages, wasted time trying to delete the messages I didn't need, and other problems that slowed the process of trying to get a newspaper out on deadline. Thus, if you were expecting a letter or news release to be printed or published online, it may have to wait a day or two until we catch up.
Technology is great but when it works against you, the frustration builds with every minute — especially when you're on deadline.
The Boston Red Sox are in the post-season for the first time in three years. Their first opponent will be the Cleveland Indians and former Red Sox skipper, Terry Francona. The Indians also have former Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli and former Red Sox relief pitcher Andrew Miller.
I am not going to predict what will happen as my early season prediction about the Red Sox not having enough pitching and offense to succeed this year kind of backfired. However, it should be a good series that might go the full five games. The series could be shorter if the Red Sox can come down from "Papi Weekend" and play some meaningful baseball.
We're two weeks into fall and the weather continues to be nice. The furnaces and wood stoves have been used a few nights, but the daytime temperatures have been very tolerable. We could still use some rain (but not Hurricane Matthew — which looks like it will head out into the Atlantic before reaching New England this weekend) as the drought continues.
Speaking of summer — the Midcoast region, from what we hear from several businesses, had a good year. The weather cooperated — no rainy or foggy stretches — and gas prices remained around the $2.25 to $2.40 mark. That was great to see.
Now it's time to get ready for colder temperatures and winter. Get your cars and trucks ready, tune up your leaf blower or perhaps you need to buy a new rake — and make sure your heating sources are ready to provide you with needed warmth this winter.
