Torin Muccino: A second generation musician who’s going places
It’s only been five years since Torin Muccino picked up a guitar.
“I knew I was supposed to do it, play the guitar,” he said. “I felt it.”
Why would a young man think he was supposed to play guitar? Music was like another member of the family while Muccino was growing up, his first five years in Wiscasset and then in Bath. His dad, Chris Muccino, a guitarist and keyboard musician, played with Liquid Daydream and later with Endless Interstate.
Sometimes Muccino would hang out during one his dad’s rehearsals, but most of the time he was doing his own thing. “I was very sports-minded.”
Once he decided to make his own music, his dad showed him how to play basic chords and then he taught himself the rest.
Always one to write poetry, Muccino said songwriting is “a natural thing” and his process is always different. “It pieces itself together ... sometimes it starts with a riff, sometimes with a verse.” He wrote all of the music and songs on his first CD, “For the Times.”
“Some are fresh, some years old. I had plenty of songs to choose from,” Muccino said of the song collection on the CD. “I chose them based on ‘comfortability,’ ones that just felt right.”
“For the Times” was recorded May 24-Aug. 15. Torin sings and plays electric and acoustic rhythm and lead guitar with seasoned musicians Jordan Warsky (Liquid Daydream and Endless Interstate) – drums and percussion, Tony McNaboe – drums and keyboards, Jon Roods – bass, Dan Bodmer – bass and Chris Muccino on electric slide guitar, keyboards and synthesizer sounds. The CD was produced and mixed by Tony Gatti, Chris and Torin. Father and son also created the CD design and layout.
“We have a lot of fun,” Muccino said of his relationship with his dad. “It’s great that we’re best friends. He has helped me out tremendously – musically ... promoting my music ... and booking my gigs. I’m super lucky.”
Speaking of those gigs, Muccino recently played his first paid gig at The Old Goat at 33 Main St. in Richmond, which just happens to be the venue for his CD release party on Friday, Nov. 2 from 9 p.m. to midnight. Caleb Jones of Driving Charlie Home is the opening act.
Muccino’s dad is, not surprisingly, his son’s number one fan. “I'm super proud of Torin, he poured his heart and soul into these songs and they came out great.”
A reviewer for SleepingBagStudios clearly concurs: “This dude is going places. Torin is working with an incredibly relevant sound for right now. And perhaps the best news? It’s relevant for sure – but what he’s doing is no carbon-copy of anyone else. Torin Muccino has an extremely bright future in front of him – this man is made of music.”
“For the Times” is available through iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Google Music Store and other digital avenues. There will also be copies at the CD release party where you can get your copy autographed.
