Understanding patient needs and expectations critical for new surgeon
Lincoln Medical Partners General Surgeon Samira Hasan, DO, can’t remember a time she didn’t want to be a doctor, but it wasn’t until medical school that she set her sights on becoming a surgeon.
There is something enormously compelling about being able to perform a procedure that can have a potentially life-changing impact, said Dr. Hasan.
Dr. Hasan joins Garth Miller, MD, and Mark Mainella, DO, at Lincoln Medical Partners General Surgery, a practice that specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures.
Dr. Hasan, who was raised outside of Wichita, Kansas, graduated from Kansas State University with dual degrees in engineering and biology. She attended medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and completed her surgical residency at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
While she was still in high school, Dr. Hasan learned how important the doctor-patient relationship is to good medicine when she was initially misdiagnosed when she had a common but potentially serious condition. That experience taught her how vital it is that doctors listen to their patients without preconceptions.
As a physician, Dr. Hasan said it is also important for her to understand her patients’ needs and their expectations for a procedure.
She wants her patients to understand what is going to happen during surgery and what they can expect following the procedure.
After several months at LincolnHealth, Dr. Hasan said she enjoys having the opportunity to perform a variety of different procedures and the chance to get to know her patients.
She and her husband, Matt Redding, and their son Julian, 2, have also enjoyed exploring the area, she said.
“This seems like a wonderful place to raise a family,” she said. “Everybody has been very warm and welcoming. Everybody has been extremely nice.”
