Unforgettable animated documentary taking awards season by storm
The year’s most inventive animated adventure is coming to Damariscotta’s Lincoln Theater this Friday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. “Flee,” from Danish writer and director, Jonas Poher Rasmussen, mixes graphic design with documentary realism in a film critics say audiences will never forget.
The groundbreaking animated documentary “Flee” depicts the experiences of Danish filmmaker Rasmussen’s longtime friend, a successful academic in Denmark, on the verge of marriage to his long-time boyfriend. He is confronted with a secret from his past as he speaks about his experiences escaping Afghanistan in the 90s. The movie tracks Amin’s challenges in reconciling his past and present experiences in his adult life, while retelling the harrowing journey that defined his youth. The animation allows Amin to maintain his anonymity even as he shares the intimate story for the first time. Together, Rasmussen and Amin are able to look back on the past and share this true story, understanding the continuing psychic damage of war, compiled from scraps of memories.
“Flee,” has won documentary awards from New York Film Critics Circle, and the Gotham Independent Film Awards, as well as three wins at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival including the coveted Cristal for a Feature Film. Now “Flee” is garnering Oscar Buzz for the upcoming 94th Annual Academy Awards with its historic odds. The film is expected to make history as a shoo-in for Best International Feature and seems likely to clinch nominations for Best Documentary and Best Animated Feature as well. A film of timely importance, “Flee” tackles human relationships in life and war, and ultimately expresses the joy, love, and acceptance that can be found through it all. “Flee” is without question, one of this year’s best documentaries and we hope you will join us in experiencing it on the big screen right here in our community living room.
