This week at the Harbor Theater
“Rear Window” - One show only Thursday, Dec. 2, 2 p.m. - Speaker Jonathan J. Cavallero, Associate Professor of Rhetoric, Film, and Screen Studies at Bates College, who had planned to be with us has had a medical emergency. He will be sending us his short presentation by video that we will run before the film on Thursday. Please plan to be seated for his introductory comments that will start at 2 p.m. There will be no Q&A after the film. Dr. Cavallero sends his deep regrets and promises he will try to join us for at least one more of the Hitchcock films in the series.
Made in 1954, “Rear Window” (PG – 1 hour 52 minutes) takes place in one room in which we become fellow peeping Toms with Jimmy Stewart observing life outside his window. In this unique setting and situation, we “see” what Stewart sees and join him in his conclusions about the lives of the neighbors across the courtyard. Suspense builds not directly through the images that Hitchcock has us see along with Stewart but through the conclusions that Stewart makes about what he observes. Add in a stunning Grace Kelly in dresses designed by Edith Head, and we get a fashion show while the suspense builds.
Plan on arriving early enough to grab your popcorn and read over your trivia sheet before settling in to watch Dr. Cavallero ‘s video that will help us see “Rear Window” through a new lens.
“Belfast” — HELD OVER. (PG-13; 1 hour, 37 minutes) - Award-winning actor and director Kenneth Branagh takes us on a nostalgic trip back to the year 1969 in Belfast, Ireland, where he grew up. The film is a heart-warming and heart-wrenching story of three generations living together amidst the disruptive and sometimes violent beginnings of the Catholic-Protestant clashes known as The Troubles. His stable and loving family and everything he thought he understood about life is changed, but joy, laughter, music and even the magic of the movies remains. Starring Judi Dench, Caitriona Balfe, Jamie Dornan, Jude Hill, and Colin Morgan. Plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, Saturday, Dec. 4, Wednesday, Dec. 8 and Thursday, Dec. 9; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5.
“Kenneth Branagh’s wistful, black-and-white coming of age tale based on his own childhood is a family-friendly story but with heft, taking place at the beginning of the troubles in Northern Ireland. It’s also an extremely likely Oscar contender in many categories, especially best picture.” - Vanity Fair
“The Hidden Life of Trees” – (PG-13; 1 hour, 40 minutes) - A walk in the woods will never be the same. Based on his best-selling book that has profoundly changed our understanding of forests, renowned forester and writer Peter Wohlleben guides us through his most enlightening ideas. Presenting his ecological, biological, and academic expertise with infectious enthusiasm and candor, Wohlleben travels through Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Vancouver to illustrate the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration he has observed in the woodland for decades. The result is an immersive and eye-opening look at the way trees live, communicate and depend on each other for existence. Playing at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, Saturday, Dec. 11, Wednesday, Dec. 15, and Thursday, Dec. 16; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12. Sponsored by the Boothbay Region Land Trust.
