This week at the Lincoln Theater
“Parallel Mothers,” opening this Friday at Lincoln Theater, brings an emotional bundle of joy to the big screen. This moving melodrama from director Pedro Almodóvar, presents the story of two single mothers whose lives intersect as they give birth on the same day, become friends, and begin a journey of love, devastating loss, deceit, and despair. Almodóvar also confronts the legacy of the Spanish Civil War and the 40 years of dictatorship that followed. A NYTimes critic’s pick, and Oscar nominee for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Penélope Cruz), Parallel Mothers is a film you surely do not want to miss.
“Licorice Pizza” - (R; 2 hours, 13 minutes) - Licorice Pizza is the story of Alana Kane and Gary Valentine growing up, running around and falling in love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (known for “Punch-Drunk Love,” “There Will Be Blood,” “Boogie Nights”), the film tracks the treacherous navigation of first love. Nominated for 3 Oscars: Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing, and Best Original Screenplay. Final show times: Wednesday, March 16 at 2 and 7 p.m. and Thursday, March 17 at 2 p.m.
“Music. Money. Madness… The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live in Maui” - (1 hour, 31 minutes) - This film chronicles Jimi Hendrix’s storied 1970 visit to Maui, his performance on the dormant crater of the Haleakala volcano and how the band became ensnared with the ill-fated Rainbow Bridge movie produced by their manager Michael Jeffery. Directed by John McDermott and produced by Janie Hendrix, George Scott and McDermott, this documentary incorporates never before released original performance footage and new interviews with firsthand participants and key players. Included are breathtaking renditions of “Foxy Lady,” and “Purple Haze.” Two screenings only on Thursday, March 17 at 7 p.m. and Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m.
“Parallel Mothers” - (R; 2 hours, 3 minutes - in Spanish with English subtitles) - Two women, Janis and Ana, coincide in a hospital room where they are going to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident. Janis, middle-aged, doesn’t regret it and she is exultant. The other, Ana, an adolescent, is scared, repentant and traumatized. Janis tries to encourage her while they move like sleepwalkers along the hospital corridors. The few words they exchange in these hours will create a very close link between the two, which by chance develops and complicates, and changes their lives in a decisive way. Nominated for 2 Oscars. Playing Friday, March 18 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 19 at 2 and 7 p.m.; Sunday, March 20 at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, March 23 at 2 and 7 p.m.; Thursday, March 24 at 2 and 7 p.m.
