Wiscasset celebrates music in schools
March is “Music In Our Schools” month and, to celebrate, the Wiscasset Schools’ performance ensembles gave a concert for students, staff and families at Wiscasset Elementary School on April 3 after having to postpone the original March date.
The concert opened with Wiscasset Middle High School Music Director Matthew Gordon introducing the WES Beginner Band. This was their debut concert and they showed off their new skills playing several short pieces followed by “Old McDonald Had a Band,” which featured each instrumental section of the band.
Next, the WMHS Band treated the audience to three advanced and exciting pieces, “Furioso,” “Star Wars” and “Dragon Slayer.” Then, WES Music Teacher Carole Drury introduced the elementary school chorus. They performed seven pieces with the theme of “Music In Our Schools.” Some favorites were, “Do You Wanna Make Music?,” “Our Place in the Choir” and “The Scooby-Doo Song.”
As a finale, WMHS singers joined the elementary chorus for a combined piece called, “Alleluia, I Will Sing.”
Mr. Gordon and Mrs. Drury are extremely proud of all the Wiscasset student musicians for their hard work and dedication to their ensembles. The next performance featuring these students will be at the “Spring Gathering of the Arts” on Thursday, May 23 at 6 p.m. in the WMHS gym. Hope to see you there!
