Woolwich helps put out Bath woods fire
Woolwich was among neighboring towns that helped Bath stop a fire that was deep into the woods at Hyde School, Bath and Woolwich fire officials said Monday.
Woolwich, Phippsburg and West Bath all sent brush trucks to the scene at 616 High Street on Sunday afternoon, Bath Fire Captain Marc Wood said.
The Woolwich crew, who also brought an all-terrain vehicle, helped put out hot spots and do overhaul at the scene, Woolwich Deputy Fire Chief Glen Kirkpatrick said.
Wood said a group of Hyde students had gotten a campfire going and then lost control of it. Although campfires don’t require burn permits, the day’s fire danger was at a level that does not allow any open burning, including campfires, Wood said.
No one was hurt, Wood said. About an acre of school property burned but no buildings were threatened; the depth into the woods, about 200 yards, made for a challenge in getting hose to the fire, he said.
