Memorial Day Weekend at Colonial Pemaquid
The Friends of Colonial Pemaquid will kick-off the 2018 summer season of events at Colonial Pemaquid State Historic site in New Harbor on Saturday, May 26. The festivities will commence at 2 pm with a concert performed by Ellsworth-based St. Andrew’s Pipes and Drums. Visitors will enjoy traditional tunes of the British Isles with musicians clad in the official Maine State Tartan plaid performed on the parade grounds of Fort William Henry, as well as commentary and a tribute to those who have served our nation. The concert, which is in its 12th year, is free to the public. There is no charge for the program, though donations are appreciated.
The Maine St. Andrews Pipes and Drums is made up of members who range in age from 15-70, bringing together an interesting mix of beginner and veteran musicians, some who have an ancestral connection to the instrument’s Scottish beginnings and others who are drawn to the instrument’s haunting sounds.
While enjoying the festivities of Memorial Day weekend, visitors are encouraged to experience English Frontier settlement life in the New World during the 17th and 18th centuries by visiting a reconstructed fort with permanent exhibit, archaeological ruins, cemetery, artifact museum, and a recreation of a 17th century thatched roof cottage. Colonial Pemaquid Historic State Site is open daily, 9 am to 5 pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day.
