River Arts in Damariscotta presents three openings in the galleries on Friday evening. The Main Gallery, juried by curator, artist and gallerist Joël LeVasseur, features the “Interiors” exhibition. The public is invited to the opening reception on Friday, May 3 from 5 - 7 p.m.

This show explores the interior spaces, an often overlooked subject matter in Maine where the exterior environment is so enthralling.

Juror, LeVasseur says of the entries in this fascinating show, “Viewing the 120 submissions for the “Interiors” show took me by surprise because of the diverse and compelling variety of work submitted, both traditional and unconventional. It was interesting to see the proliferation of styles, and how strong each artist had taken the task at hand. A consistent theme flowed through much of the work, often with a window in the composition, while others defined interiors through carved or constructed works of art, requiring the viewer to ask questions, possibly about the passage of time and the impermanence of our current world.”

LeVasseur selected four artists for the Invitational Hall. Works by Ed McCartan, Jennetta Jennings, Nan Ross and David Allen will be presented for the month of May, opening on Friday as well.

In the West Gallery, for the first time in a combined show, the Gibsons of Orrs Island will be exhibiting their ceramic sculptures and abstract paintings.

The work on display will include large, lush, abstract compositions by Robert Gibson and finely hand-built, low-fire ceramic sculptures by Catherine Gibson. The Gibson exhibit will be on display until May 15.

All three shows will open on Friday, May 3 from 5 to 7 pm. Some exceptional work is installed in these shows and the reception will be a fine opportunity to meet many of the artists.
