Choral music fans in the Midcoast region have a chance to hear some wonderful new and old music this weekend, as the Tapestry Singers perform a concert of music composed entirely by women composers.

In decades and centuries past, women composers and performers of classical music struggled to gain respect and attention, due to myths about their capabilities. This concert puts any doubts to rest.

The music ranges from Hildegard von Bingen’s early 12th century chant to music composed by Sarah Quartel, a Canadian composer born in 1984. In fact, most of the music on the program was written by composers living today, which means the audience will be treated to a variety of fresh and lively pieces. The musical genres range from madrigals to spirituals to folk songs to ballads — something for every listener. And the texts feature beloved poets, including Langston Hughes, Sara Teasdale, e.e. cummings, and William Shakespeare.

Tapestry Singers is made up of 60 singers ranging in age from their teens to their eighties. They travel from towns within a 25-mile radius of Newcastle to rehearse at Lincoln Academy on Monday evenings throughout the school year. The schedule for auditions for next year’s 2019-2020 season will be announced in August.

This upcoming spring 2019 concert, “Infinite Circle of Song,” will be presented at St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle on Saturday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 9 at 5 p.m.
