Lions celebrate 25 years in Wiscasset
The five active charter members of the Wiscasset Lions Club were recognized for their service at the club’s April 3 meeting at Ship’s Chow Hall.
Charter members Jane Albert and Sue Varney remember going to the Gardiner bowling alley with a group of Wiscasset Lions to bowl with the blind. “It was great fun. We had a great time,” Varney said.
Charter member Bob Albert said, “We could not have done all these things without a lot of help from the community.”
The Wiscasset Lions, and their fellow club members nationwide, are known for service to their communities, especially providing equipment and services to assist those with impaired sight and defective hearing.

They also donate funds to Camp Post Card so young people can attend a summer camp, and they contribute to Camp Sunshine and sponsor soap box derby drivers. Recently they donated to the “Feed our Scholars” program and the 4-H Club at the Morris Farm.
For many years they gave two scholarships to high school students to help with their college expense, and sponsored programs the high school.
To fund their programs they have cooked and served lunch at Wiscasset town meetings, manned food wagons at the Wiscasset Race Track and served hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries and drinks on Wiscasset waterfront.
