CTL students collect data for New England scientists
The students in fifth and sixth grade at the Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb conducted a site survey at Rachel Carson Salt Pond Preserve in New Harbor last week. Using a belt transect technique developed by scientists from New England, they began by hauling their equipment out to within one meter of the low tide line. The students then laid a transect line, and randomly placed quadrats along the line on the water side. They followed a protocol: taking pictures of the quadrat and site, searching the quadrat for crabs, putting the crabs in buckets and then identifying, measuring and logging all of the results. The data will be reviewed and shared with area scientists.
