Art series returns Nov. 8
Harbor Theater presents a new season of the popular British film series: “Exhibition on Screen,” (EOS) showing six films on works of the world’s most beloved artists monthly on Fridays at 2 p.m.
Starting off the series is “Leonardo: The Works” on Nov. 8. A comprehensive look at the art of Leonardo da Vinci, award-winning writer and director Phil Grabsky traveled to eight countries to film virtually all the attributed Leonardo works in situ. The film marks the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the artist’s death.
Leonardo’s peerless paintings will be at the core of this film, presenting every single painting attributed to him, including The Last Supper, Lady with an Ermine, Ginevra de’ Benci, Madonna Litta, Virgin of the Rocks and what is widely considered the most famous artwork of all time — The Mona Lisa. Leonardo: The Works also looks afresh at Leonardo’s life through the prism of his art, threading biography and artistic output together with the assistance of the world’s foremost curators, critics and historians - here speaking candidly with great knowledge and humor.
On Jan. 10 the series continues with “Canaletto and Venice,” an immersive journey into the life and art of Venice’s famous view-painter. No artist better captures the essence and allure of Venice than Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto. The remarkable group of over 200 paintings, drawings and prints on display will give cinema-goers their very own 21st century grand tour, visiting the sites enjoyed by their 18th century counterparts and immortalized in Canaletto’s views.
Feb. 7 is the date for “Matisse: Tate to MoMA.” Hailed as the most successful exhibition in the history of London’s Tate Modern gallery, audiences are invited to enjoy an intimate, behind-the-scenes documentary about this once-in-a-lifetime blockbuster exhibition with expert contributions from those that knew Matisse as well as curators, historians, Tate director Nicholas Serota and New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) director Glenn Lowry.
“Vermeer and Music” screens March 6. The National Gallery of London is offering a fresh look at Johannes Vermeer, painter of the famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” In an exhibition entitled “Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure,” with the focus on Vermeer’s relationship with music. Filmed in London, New York, Washington DC, Amsterdam, the Hague and Delft, the film also guides us through Vermeer’s entire life story.
April 10: “Manet: Portraying Life.” This eagerly awaited exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts was the first ever retrospective devoted to the portraiture of Edouard Manet. Spanning this enigmatic and, at times, controversial artist’s entire career, the exhibit brought together works from across Europe, Asia and the USA. Manet’s portraiture has never been explored in exhibition form, despite it forming around half of his artistic output. He painted his family, friends and the literary, political and artistic figures of the day, giving life not only to his subjects but also to Parisian society.
The final production of this series will feature noted Mexican artist “Frida Kahlo,” and will be shown when the major exhibition opens next summer on July 16, with a repeat show on Saturday, July 17 at 2 p.m. This highly engaging film takes us on a journey through the life of one of the most prevalent female icons of our time: Frida Kahlo. She was a prolific self-portraitist, using the canvas as a mirror through all stages of her turbulent and, at times, tragic life. With interviews, commentary and Frida’s own words, EOS guides us through her life which was much happier than it seemed.
Working with all the world’s major international museums and galleries, Exhibition on Screen creates films which offer a cinematic immersion into the world’s best loved art, accompanied by insights from the world’s leading historians and art critics.
