Henry Isaacs has painted up and down the Maine Coast, across the United States, and in too many countries around the world to count, including two trips to Nepal and the Himalayas in 2019. But it wasn’t until a commission came from a Southport family to paint their favorite view of Boothbay Harbor that Isaacs saw just how beautiful our famous harbor is. That view is from the vantage of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club looking southeast.

Isaacs and his wife Donna first visited the Yacht Club on a “bluebird” kind of day in the late spring of last year. As they slowly strolled around the Club’s lovely grounds, the waterfront came into view. Henry and Donna were awestruck by the sight of dozens of tiny Opti sailboats darting and racing across the harbor. Not only that, but the Club’s mooring field was also a hive of activity as motorboats and sailboats came and went from their moorings.

Isaacs made several oil sketches on the spot (he calls them “travel notes”). Over the course of the year, he came back to Boothbay Harbor again and again to experience the harbor at different times of the year. After Isaacs finished his commission, he couldn’t resist creating another body of work focusing just on Boothbay Harbor.

The new Boothbay Harbor series can be seen in the attached e-catalogue. Some are being framed and will be available for viewing and purchasing next week. Isaacs’ painting style is often called joyous—big, bold colorful brushstrokes, notably with no black at all. Just what’s needed to brighten the gray late-winter days.
