This week at Lincoln Theater
This week, we bring you an intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” starring Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield. This biopic tells the story of how Christianity got turned into showbiz. As Owen Gleiberman writes in Variety, “Chastain and Garfield give performances that are brashly entertaining but also canny and layered, as the characters get caught up in something far bigger than themselves.”
“I’m Your Man” - (R; 1 hour, 45 minutes – In German with English Subtitles) - In order to obtain funds for her research, Alma (Maren Eggert) is persuaded to participate in an extraordinary study. For three weeks she is required to live with Tom (Dan Stevens), a humanoid robot designed to be the perfect life partner for her, tailored to her character and needs. According to Roger Ebert’s film reviewer Brian Tallerico, the film is “… a clever little movie, a film that defies its set-up as a familiar, quirky rom-com to become something deeper and more poignant about the human condition.” Final screenings at 2 and & 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 and Thursday, Oct. 28.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye” - (PG-13; 2 hours, 6 minutes) - An intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker (Jessica Chastain). He thinks he can manipulate her, but soon finds out he’s wrong. The screenwriter’s ambivalence about their relationship and her unwillingness to let go leads to a situation of violence, madness, and death. Film Historian Jeannie MacDonald will share juicy tidbits about the film pre and post screening.
