This week at the Harbor Theater
“Belfast” - (PG-13; 1 hour, 37 minutes) - Award-winning actor and director Kenneth Branagh takes us on a nostalgic trip back to the year 1969 in Belfast, Ireland, where he grew up. The film is a heart-warming and heart-wrenching story of three generations living together amidst the disruptive and sometimes violent beginnings of the Catholic-Protestant clashes known as The Troubles. His stable and loving family and everything he thought he understood about life is changed, but joy, laughter, music and even the magic of the movies remains. Starring Judi Dench, Caitriona Balfe, Jamie Dornan, Jude Hill, and Colin Morgan. Final screenings of this film, held over for a second week, are at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8 and Thursday, Dec. 9.
“The Hidden Life of Trees” – (PG-13; 1 hour, 40 minutes) - A walk in the woods will never be the same after watching this film. Based on his best-selling book that has profoundly changed our understanding of forests, renowned forester and writer Peter Wohlleben guides us through his most enlightening ideas. Presenting his ecological, biological and academic expertise with infectious enthusiasm and candor, Wohlleben travels through Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Vancouver to illustrate the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration he has observed in the woodland for decades. The result is an immersive and eye-opening look at the way trees live, communicate and depend on each other for existence. Plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10; Saturday, Dec. 11; Wednesday, Dec. 15; Thursday, Dec. 16; and at 2 p.m. only Sunday, Dec. 12. Sponsored by the Boothbay Region Land Trust
“It’s a documentary full of subtle, quiet moments, reminding us that a liberal dose of wonder is something quite powerful. Rather than taking nature for granted, it makes us appreciate it all the more for its many intricacies.” - Film Inquiry

Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis reunited for "Polar Express," an inspiring adventure based on the beloved children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. Using never-before-seen archival footage, personal photos, first-person narratives, and cutting-edge, mouth-watering food cinematography, the film traces Julia's surprising path, from her struggles to create and publish the revolutionary Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961) which has sold more than 2.5 million copies to date, to her empowering story of a woman who found fame in her 50s, and her calling as an unlikely television sensation.
