‘Seussical Jr.’ the musical delights audiences
Seussical Jr. was an entertaining, in-between-holidays show performed by 28 Boothbay Region YMCA Y-Arts youth in three performances at Lincoln Theater Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3-5.
Memorable characters from Dr. Seuss sang and performed a story about friendship, forgiveness, dedication and more. The Cat in the Hat (Sophia Mansfield), Horton the Elephant (Spencer Pottle), Gertrude McFuzz (Sofia Michaud), Lazy Mayzie (Jojo Shea), and JoJo, a Who child (Finn Sullivan), were the main players. The Cat in the Hat opens the play, bringing the audience to The Jungle of Nool where the friendly elephant Horton finds a speck of dust containing Whoville where he meets JoJo, who thinks too much. Horton protects the piece of dust on clover. He is also in charge of protecting an abandoned egg, left in his care by Mayzie la Bird. Horton tries to convince other animals in the jungle of the existence of the Whos, but is ridiculed and put on trial for insanity. His neighbor, Gertrude McFuzz, is the only one to believe Horton and the two eventually fall in love.
The show featured over two dozen songs, with four of the most memorable being “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!”, “It’s Possible,” “Alone in the Universe” and the finale, “Green Eggs and Ham.”
Once again, Y-Arts Director Emily Mirabile put together an entertaining show for local live theater fans.
Other notable characters in the play included Sour Kangaroo (Abby Amaral), Young Kangaroo (Kayla Watts), the Wickershams (Sarah Harris, Trey Tibbetts and Anderson Pierpan), Mayor of Who (Ford Harris), Mrs. MaPyor (Scout Martin), Judge Yertle/Bird Girl (Imij Armstead), Vlad/Bird Girl (Rory Vaudreuil), Citizens of Who (Lily Billings, Vivian Flagg, Agatha Harris, Oscar Mirabile and Emily Smart), Bird Girls (Fiona Bishop, Samantha Colby, Natalie Flagg, Maya Jacobs, Meara McManus, Allison Smart and Jessie Ullo), Thing 1 (Colin Cantillo) and Thing 2/Who Citizen (Nicholas Colby). Pierpan also made a brief appearance as The Grinch, while Sarah Harris, Trey Tibbetts and Kayla Watts played Who Citizens.
Tech crew included Ella Watts, Damon Leibert and Emily Mirabile, and set pieces were built by Christopher Armstead.
