“The Good House” – (R; 1 hour, 43 minutes) - Set on Boston’s North Shore, an area whose fishing towns are being gentrified, the film takes us into the houses and hearts of realtor Hildy Good (Sigourney Weaver) and fisherman Frank Getchell (Kevin Kline). Hildy, who’s warm but tough, is the top realtor in the area, but has a bit of a drinking problem that isn’t always quite hidden. Frank, who’s salt of the earth except that he’s salt of the sea, is equally successful, and the two have a longstanding flame that burns brighter, if mostly controlled, as they age. Final screenings at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 and Thursday, Oct. 20.
“Edward Hopper – Exhibition On Screen” – (Run time: 90 minutes) - Hopper’s work is the most recognizable art in America – popular, praised, and mysterious. This new film takes a deep look into Hopper’s art, his life, and his relationships. From his early career as an illustrator, to his wife giving up her own promising art career to be his manager, to his critical and commercial acclaim, and in his own words – this film explores the enigmatic personality behind the brush… Combined with expert interviews, diaries, and a startling visual reflection of American life, Hopper brings to life America’s arguably most influential artist. “Amsterdam” – (R; 2 hours, 14 minutes) - This is a fascinating and richly intricate tale that brilliantly weaves historical fact with fiction for a timely, cinematic experience. Set in the 1930s, it follows three friends who witness a murder, become suspects themselves, and uncover one of the most outrageous plots in American history. Written and directed by David O. Russell. Stars Christian Bale, Margot Robbie. John David Washington, Chris Rock, Mike Meyers, Robert DeNiro. Food and Film Series: “Big Night” – (R; 1 hour, 47 minutes) -In a restaurant run by two Italian immigrants, the tables sit empty despite the extraordinary talents of Primo the chef (Tony Shalhoub) and the ambitious efforts of his brother Secondo (Stanley Tucci), A celebrity night at their restaurant promises not only to turn their business around but to change their lives. It”s a five-course gourmet experience filled with rich, delicious characters including the marriage-minded girlfriend (Minnie Driver), the seductive mistress (Isabella Rossellini) and the successful rival (Ian Holm). From the first bite to the last, this critically acclaimed movie dishes up an irresistible evening of scrumptious entertainment. “Moonage Daydream” – (PG-13; 2 hours, 15 minutes) – A cinematic odyssey exploring Bowie’s creative, spiritual and musical journey. From the visionary mind of Brett Morgen, “Moonage Daydream” features captivating, never-before-seen footage and performances spanning David Bowie’s 54-year career. The film includes 40 exclusively remastered Bowie songs. It is the first film ever sanctioned by the Bowie Estate, with local access to the artists’ archives. Opens Oct. 28.
Community Halloween matinee: “Ghostbusters” (1984 - PG; 1 hour, 47 minutes) - After losing their academic posts at a prestigious university, a team of parapsychologists goes into business as proton-pack-toting “ghostbusters” who exterminate ghouls and supernatural pests of all stripes. An ad campaign pays off when a knockout cellist hires the squad to purge her swanky digs of demons that appear to be living in her refrigerator. Who ya gonna call? One show only: Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. - Free popcorn, too!
