“The Menu” - (R; running time 1 hour, 47 minutes) - A couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. Final showtimes Thursday, Jan. 12 at 2 and 7 p.m.
“Empire of Light” - (R; 1 hour, 59 minutes) - Set in an English seaside town in the early 1980s, “Empire of Light” is a powerful and poignant story about human connection and the magic of cinema. Stars Academy Award winners Olivia Colman and Colin Firth; and BAFTA winner Michael Ward. Playing Friday, Jan. 13 and Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 2 and 7 p.m.;, Saturday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.; and Thursday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.
“Xanadu JR!” - Y Arts presentation - “Xanadu JR!” follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira (Sofia Michaud), who descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California, on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny (Spencer Pottle), to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first Roller Disco. (Hey, it’s 1980!) But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds. Xanadu JR. is inspired by the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical and the Universal Pictures’ cult classic movie that starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. “Xanadu JR!” is a moving, electrifying tale of endless fun that will keep audiences in stitches while the original, legendary chart-topping tunes lift them out of their seats. Performances are at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14. All tickets are $5 and general admission.
“Fedora” - The Met Live in HD - (2 hours, 41 minutes - 1 intermission) - Pre-opera talk by Dr. Morton Achter at 11:45 a.m. - Umberto Giordano’s exhilarating drama returns to the Met repertory for the first time in 25 years. Packed with memorable melodies, show stopping arias, and explosive confrontations, “Fedora” stars soprano Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role of the 19th-century Russian princess who falls in love with her fiancé’s murderer, Count Loris, sung by star tenor Piotr Beczała. Met maestro Marco Armiliato conducting. Playing Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m.. Tickets: $25 adult; $23 member; $5 youth 18 and under.
“Selma” - (PG-13; 2 hours, 8 minutes) - Free screening of the 2014 Academy Award winning film, “Selma” in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for Blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. King (David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated with President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Playing Sun Jan 15 at 2 PM.
