Support the Lady Wolverines
Dear Editor:
I’ve been attending some of the girls varsity basketball games at Wiscasset Middle High School lately since I found out that there is a person on the team that I know. Unfortunately, the team has been struggling a little this season.
One thing stands out for me about these games is the severe lack of Wiscasset fans in attendance. A comment by one of the players makes me think that part of their struggle is possibly the result of the team getting very little fan support even from fellow students. I go to as many of the games as I can but the home game on the Jan. 24 stood out as the number of players may have actually out-numbered the fans in the stands.
I thought this might be a small-town thing but I went to an away game in Boothbay and the stands were packed. I also went to an away game in Monmouth recently and there were probably 100-plus Monmouth fans there – both adults and students.
Wiscasset fan attendance has been dismal in comparison. I understand that going to games, especially away games, might be a challenge for some but these ladies work hard in preparation for these games and then work even harder on the court. It’s unfortunate that their own classmates and other Wiscasset residents can’t seem to make it to even some their home games to support them. The season will be over in February but there is still time to show them some support and end the season on a positive note. That support doesn’t cost you anything except a little of your time. How about prying some of that time loose to support these Lady Wolverines.
