This week at Lincoln Theater
“Forrest Gump” - (PG-13; 2 hours, 22 minutes) - What better way to celebrate summer than with some old favorites on the big screen! Lincoln Theater is pleased to present the final film in our 2023 Summer Blockbuster series, “Forrest Gump.” Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares about most may be the most difficult to save — his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright). Final showtime Thursday, Aug. 17 at 2 p.m.
“Afire” - (NR; 1 hour, 43 minutes - in German with English subtitles) - While vacationing by the Baltic Sea, writer Leon and photographer Felix are surprised by the presence of a mysterious young woman staying as a guest at Felix’s family’s holiday home. She distracts Leon from finishing his latest novel and with brutal honesty, forces him to confront his caustic temperament and self-absorption. As they grow closer, an encroaching forest fire threatens the group and tensions escalate when a handsome lifeguard and Leon’s tight-lipped book editor also arrive. Christian Petzold’s acclaimed latest was the winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival. Playing at 2 and 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18; Wednesday, Aug. 23 and Thursday, Aug. 24.

“John & Francis Ford Film Festival” - Join the Maine Irish Heritage Center for a double feature presentation – the premiere screening of a newly released silent western “The Post Telegrapher,” short film from Francis Ford, followed by John Ford’s “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” (1962). Questions arise when Senator Stoddard (James Stewart) attends the funeral of a local man named Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) in a small Western town. Flashing back, we learn Doniphon saved Stoddard, then a lawyer, when he was roughed up by a crew of outlaws terrorizing the town, led by Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). Immediately following the screenings, you are invited to stay for a talkback with special guests, Joseph McBride, film historian and author of the definitive “Searching For John Ford,” and Kathy Fuller-Seeley, film historian and Francis Ford expert.
