Be sure to attend ‘Wings Over Wiscasset’
If you have watched your favorite local newspaper over the last several weeks, you might have noticed we were spending a lot of space on the “Wings Over Wiscasset” airshow/entertainment package set for Tuesday, Aug. 6.
We did it on purpose.
First of all, it is a cool idea. We all watch programs about the World War II. As the first major war that was filmed, we have vast amount of visual records to ordinary augment written and oral histories of that pivotal conflict. Somewhere on your TV, you can find a documentary of some facet of that conflict on one channel or another.
On August 6, you will have a chance to walk up and touch some of the very airplanes that were major performers on that stage. Some veterans may be there, too, and it might be the last time you could go up and thank them for their service.
My favorite plane is the P-51 Mustang, maybe the best of the best of the World War II fighter planes. This is a bona fide sports car, a hot rod with wings. It is a little plane with a great big engine, a supercharged 12-cylinder Rolls Royce Merlin built under license by Packard. The mighty motor puts out nearly 1,500 horsepower that would push this beauty to almost 42,000 feet in the sky with speeds nearing 450 miles per hour.
Second, it will give some of the World War II vets, gents and ladies all, a chance to remember. The Music Doing Good entertainment group will perform some of that era’s tunes and that will add to their enjoyment.
Third, lots of kids, will get a chance to see interact with these veterans and see the planes in person.
Finally, it will give Wiscasset a chance to show off a bit. A chance for our community to show the rest of the state, and our friends from away, that we are more than lobster shack with a good lobster roll and a major league traffic jam.
We urge you to attend the show. We think you will enjoy it.
And while you are in town, why not stop in at some of our galleries and shops. Take a minute and enjoy our little village by the river. You won’t regret it either.
