Summertime is busy time in Maine
Dear Readers,
Whew, what a week. When it is Summertime in our neighborhood, your friends at Ye Olde Boothbay Register and the Not so Olde Wiscasset Newspaper are more than a bit busy. We love it.
In Wiscasset, last week saw the “Wings Over Wiscasset” event, which included an air show lectures by veterans, science presentations for kids, a Music Doing Good concert and a fireworks show.
Nearly 5,000 folks attended the event. It was a special chance for our World War II era veterans from “The Greatest Generation” to reconnect with some old memories. It also gave them a chance to introduce their kids and grandkids to their era.
As the sleek (and not so sleek) fighters and the lone torpedo bomber roared down the runway, they gave more than a few folks a chill down their spines.
One bomber pilot contrasted the scene with a memory long tucked in a corner of his brain.
Think what it would have sounded like to have a hundred four-engine bombers warming up for a raid on the Nazi forces, explained one veteran of the Eighth Air Force.
Another said the sight of the F4U Corsair fighter took him back to the days when he was a young Marine in the South Pacific and worked on these old war birds.
The WOW event was a great chance to show our summer visitors a secret that our hometown folks knew all along: there is a lot more to Wiscasset than a great lobster roll and a not so great traffic jam.
In Boothbay Harbor, Tim Hodgdon’s annual Shipyard Cup race brought a small fleet of the world’s super yachts to our little harbor for a weekend of big boat racing. And Hodgdon Yachts’ hometown favorite, the spectacular superyacht Scheherazade was the winner.
While Friday was a bit overcast, the weather Saturday and Sunday were bright and clear. The sight of the big boats running downwind, cutting through the waves with their sails billowing out, is a sight few folks get a chance to see.
For over a year, we have posted stories and photos of events and happenings in Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport, Edgecomb, Wiscasset, Westport Island, Alna, Dresden, Woolwich and beyond.
In addition to these, we have introduced video into the mix. Reporter Ryan Leighton shot a WOW video and also the one from the Shipyard Cup. They are pretty special.
Some of our readers and advertisers seem to like it too. We hope you do too.
In the last few weeks, we have also rolled out a new service for you. It is a version of our website designed to fit on your smartphone.
Some of our readers tell us they love the website, but some said the type was a bit small for elderly eyes, so we built a version that is easier to read. We encourage you to try it out.
You can find it by visiting m.boothbayregister.com. (Replace the usual “www” with “m” for mobile.)
Enjoy.
