Curtain up at the Lincoln Theater: ‘A Birder’s Guide to Everything,’ ‘Gloria’ and more
There are three very different movie experiences this week – from the humor of Gloria and the intrigue of The Girl with the Pearl Earring, to the coming of age of some young birders. Hopefully there is something interesting for everyone. While you checking them out, maybe you’ll discover some of the brass plaques on the theater seats. Did you know you could also have a movie seat at the theater with your name on it? Be sure to ask about it when you next visit.
Gloria (R, 1 hour 50 minutes)
As the title character, a divorced Chilean 50-something looking for love among the silver-haired Romeos of Santiago, Paulina García delivers a remarkable performance. She is passionate, anxious, determined and bewildered, and the director, Sebastián Lelio, explores her life without pity or cheerleading. The plot follows Gloria’s romance with Rodolfo (Sergio Hernández), a less-than-stellar catch, and Mr. Lelio uses their relationship as the window into middle age, modern sexual mores and contemporary Chilean society. In Spanish with English subtitles. Final showings Wednesday, April 9 and Thursday, April 10 at 2 and 7 p.m. Presented in partnership with the Endless Spa.
Tim’s Vermeer (PG-13, 1 hour 20 minutes)
One of the title figures of this documentary is Tim Jenison, a scientist, inventor and restless hobbyist who embarked on a multi-year odyssey to discover whether the movie’s other, better known, subject, the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer, used any kind of optical tools when he created his extraordinary paintings. How did 17th century Dutch Master who created the "Girl with a Pearl Earring" manage to paint so photo-realistically -- 150 years before the invention of photography? The film was directed by Teller and produced by Penn Jillette. Plays Friday, April 11 and Thursday April 17 at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 13 at 7 p.m., and Wednesday April 16 at 2 p.m. Presented in partnership with Laura Cabot Catering.
Tapestry Singers in Concert
The Tapestry Singers of Newcastle, Maine will perform the wonderful Mozart Requiem, with soloists and full orchestra, featuring the DaPonte String Quartet. Saturday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 13 at 3 p.m.
A Birder’s Guide to Everything (PG-13, 1 hour 28 minutes)
David Portnoy (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a 15-year-old birding fanatic, thinks that he's made the discovery of a lifetime. So, on the eve of his father's remarriage, he escapes on an epic road trip with his best friends to solidify their place in birding history. This one night only showing is a benefit screening for the Friends of Hog Island and Mid-Coast Audubon. Tickets at the door. Wednesday, April 16 at 7 p.m.
