Waldoboro sisters featured with Maine Pro Musica
The Lincoln Arts Festival and Opera House at Boothbay Harbor present a performance by Maine Pro Musica on Wednesday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. This perfect summer concert offers the Bach Concerto for Two Violins, Dvorak’s Serenade, Op 44, D Minor, and Mozart’s Symphony No 29.
Featured in the Bach concerto are violinist sisters Josie and Sophia Davis of Waldoboro. Both are students at the renowned Oberlin College and Conservatory.
Senior Josie has appeared as the concertmaster of the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, as a member of the Contemporary Music Ensemble, and has performed in Carnegie Hall as a member of the Oberlin Symphony Orchestra. She has spent time in Panama and India performing chamber music and teaching violin to underprivileged children.
Sophomore Sophie has participated in Kneisel Hall’s Maine Young Musician Program, Bay Chamber Concert’s Next Generation Program, the Maine All-State Orchestra, the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, and in 2010 she appeared with her sister on NPR’s “From the Top.” She has also spent several months studying tango violin in Buenos Aires, Argentina and teaching children in India.
Professional musicians who live and perform year round throughout the state comprise the Maine Pro Musica orchestra. The Maine Pro Musica 55-member orchestra models itself on turn-of-the-century bands that traveled the countryside bringing music to communities that rarely got to experience live orchestral music. That image will be revived at the July 23 performance in Boothbay Harbor’s renovated 19th century opera house.
Founder/conductor Rockport resident Janna Hymes also conducts the Williamsburg Symphonia in Virginia. A native of New York and Fulbright Scholar, Hymes holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
