The Wailin’ Jennys play to a full house
The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor was packed Saturday evening to experience an amazing performance by the Wailin’ Jennys. The concert in conjunction with the opening weekend of Harbor Fest 2014 and the Labor Day weekend was sold out.
The crowd was in a great mood and responded vocally - sometimes quite humorously engaging with the artists - throughout the performance. The artists interacted with the group and several times invited the audience to join them on the rest of their tour. The 2 hour plus show featured the groups' songs - old and new. The standing ovation at the end resulted in a 2 song encore.
The trio of women - Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody and Heather Masse - feature their vocal talents in which all 3 of their voices amazingly blend - Ruth the soprano, Heather the bass, and Nicky in the middle. In addition to their voices, all 3 are talented musicians incorporating acoustic guitar, accordion, banjo, bass, harmonica, ukulele, and percussion instruments in their songs. They were accompanied on stage by Moody's brother - Richard Moody - an extraordinary violinist.
Moody and Mehta hail from Manitoba, Canada. Massey a native of Maine is currently New York based.
Their music is a blend of their interests - ranging from gospel, folk, country to blues. The audience was continually treated to varying genres of music throughout the night. And, was additionally touched by several of the songs being bedtime lullabies written for their young children.
The Wailin Jennys ended the evening thanking the audience and the community for their support of live entertainment and their support of the Boothbay Opera House.
