Pickup, Jeep collide on Route 1 in Woolwich
A pickup truck with a plow on it and a Jeep collided on Woolwich’s Route 1 near the Wiscasset line on Feb. 25, leaving the Jeep on its side but injuring no one, a Sagadahoc County sheriff’s deputy said.
Both vehicles were northbound on slushy road conditions when the 2010 GMC Sierra truck, driven by Jason Barabee, 40, of Georgetown slowed to turn left into the parking lot of Montsweag Roadhouse, Deputy Brian Quinn said. David Hasenfus, 76, of Needham, Massachusetts, driving a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, used the brakes but could not stop in time to avoid hitting the truck, Quinn said. The Jeep’s right front and the truck’s left front collided, sending the Jeep into a snowbank and onto its side, he said.
Woolwich firefighters freed Hasenfus from the seatbelt he was wearing and used a step ladder to help him get out of the Jeep. Wiscasset police also responded to assist at the scene, Quinn said.
Quinn attributed the approximately 9:35 a.m. crash to slush on the roadway.
