Boothbay mother and son charged after Wiscasset crash
One driver was hurt and the other driver and his mother were facing charges April 9 after a rear-end crash on Route 27 in Wiscasset on Wednesday, April 8.
At about 4:30 p.m., Wiscasset Chief Troy Cline, along with Wiscasset Fire and EMS personnel, responded to the area of Gardiner Road (Route 27) and Huntoon Hill Road for a two-vehicle crash. It had been reported that one of the vehicles had fled the scene traveling north on Gardiner Road.
Public safety personnel continued to receive updates from Lincoln County Communications staff while en route to the scene. A witness indicated that the male driver of the suspect vehicle had gotten into a white four-door Subaru and fled up Fowle Hill Road.
Wiscasset Fire and EMS personnel arrived on scene first and located the suspect vehicle on Gardiner Road in the area of Fowle Hill Road. The suspect vehicle was identified as a gray 2011 Ford F-350 Super Duty registered to Scott Norwood, 25, of Boothbay.
The truck had lost control and gone into a swampy area near the intersection, where it got stuck.
Cline arrived at the Huntoon Hill Road scene, where the second driver was in a large red and white 2005 International box truck registered to Hammond Lumber Company. The driver of this vehicle was identified as Frank Garboski Jr., 46, of Belgrade.
Garboski told Cline that he had stopped for turning traffic when he felt the impact from a vehicle rear-ending his truck, and that he observed a gray pick-up fleeing the area afterward with substantial front end damage. He also provided Cline with a registration plate that allegedly came off the front of the suspect vehicle.
Garboski was subsequently transported to Mid Coast Hospital for treatment of back and abdominal pain.
A subsequent investigation involved the Wiscasset Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Boothbay Harbor Police Department.
As a direct result of this investigation two suspects have been charged in connection to this incident.
Norwood and his mother, Mary Norwood, 46, also of Boothbay, responded to the Wiscasset Police Department Thursday, April 9.
Scott Norwood was subsequently charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a Class D crime; failure to report an accident by quickest means, a Class E crime; and driving to endanger, a Class E crime.
Scott Norwood had allegedly fled the scene to a local business where he contacted his mother to come pick him up. She responded and allegedly removed her son from the area of the accident. She was subsequently charged with hindering apprehension and/or prosecution, a Class E crime.
Both Scott Norwood and Mary Norwood have arraignment dates of April 30 in Wiscasset District Court, at 8:30 a.m.
