Candelia to premiere 'The Pemaquid Suite' on June 6
The flute choir, Candelia, will present an original composition, “The Pemaquid Suite,” by composer Peter Van Siclen at a performance at Skidompha Public Library in Damariscotta on Saturday, June 6 at 7 p.m.
Van Siclen’s love of Maine surfaced at the age of three when his parents, Pam and John Van Siclen, bought a log house on Damariscotta Lake. His familiarity with Lincoln County is reflected in the titles of the movements of The Pemaquid Suite: Damariscotta, Round Pond and Tidewater Way, the retreat center in South Bristol that his parents ran at that time.
Van Siclen’s parents now live in Newcastle and his mother is the newest member of Candelia. She joins original members of the Candelia Flute Ensemble: Ann Durkin, Amelia Jenkins, Carol McMullen and Nan White. Candelia now performs music written for both flute quartets and quintets and persuaded Van Siclen to arrange “The Pemaquid Suite” for five flutes.
Van Siclen, who lives in Middletown, Connecticut with his wife Mary Beth, will attend the performance that will also include lively pieces from the Baroque era, familiar folk tunes such as “Shenandoah” and “Down by the Riverside,” “Flight of the Bumblebee” with a little Scott Joplin thrown in.
A donation of $10 will be taken at the door. Free admission for students.
Skidompha is located at 184 Main Street.
