Irish and Scottish traditional music at Harper's Wood
Celtic harpist Sue Richards with Carolyn Surrick on viola da gamba, will perform Baroque, Renaissance and Celtic music 7 p.m. on Monday, July 27, at Harper's Wood in Round Pond. The concert will feature Irish and Scottish traditional music (jigs and reels and airs), some Swedish, and beautiful original compositions.
Sue Richards is an internationally known performer, teacher, composer and author. She has recorded dozens of CDs, and has entertained audiences throughout the U.S. and Europe. Richards has performed numerous times for the Embassy of Ireland in Washington, D.C., has twice played for President Bill Clinton, and recently added Queen Elizabeth II and President and Mrs. Bush to her list.
Richards has shared the stage with The Chieftains and has appeared on Garrison Keillor's “A Prairie Home Companion.” She has performed in Scotland at Celtic Connections in Glasgow and at the Edinburgh International Harp Festiva, and recently toured Norway and Sweden with the Harpa ensemble.
Richards can be heard on dozens of recordings, both solo, with her group Ceoltoiri, and with Grammy-nominated Ensemble Galilei, a group of five women performing Celtic, Early, and original music.
Carolyn Surrick is an American master of the viola da gamba, an older string instrument rather like a small cello that is held in the lap. She is a pioneer in innovative programming that links Baroque and Renaissance music to traditional Celtic music. Surrick was the founder of Ensemble Galilei, a unique ensemble most commonly described as a “Celtic/early music crossover group.” She has also been a member of Voices of the Golden Age and The Smithsonian Chamber Players.
Enjoy these two consummate musicians in the intimate atmosphere of a house concert, a setting most appropriate for this music. Harper's Wood is located on the Upper Pond Road in Bristol.
